Production of Liquid Biofuels front Biomass: Emerging Technologies
نویسندگان
چکیده
This is an overview of the emerging technologies that have been developed recently or are in the process of development for ethanol (biofuel) production from agricultural residues. )n this direction numerous advances have been made. Problems associated with inhibitor generation and detoxification, fermentation of both hexoses and pentoses to ethanol, and development of efficient microbial strains have partially been addressed. Simultaneous product recovery and process consolidation and/or integration will further improve the economics of production of biofuels from biomass. It is emphasized that numerous domestic and international companies have initiated their programs to commer cia1ize conversion of biomass (agricultural residues) to biofuels. Separation and use of byproducts as additional sources of generating revenues can strengthen this fermentation further.

Potential for Genetic Improvement of Sugarcane as a Source of Biomass for Biofuels
Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids) has great potential as a major feedstock for biofuel production worldwide. It is considered among the best options for producing biofuels today due to an exceptional biomass production capacity, high carbohydrate (sugar + fiber) content, and a favorable energy input/output ratio. To maximize the conversion of sugarcane biomass into biofuels, it is imperative t...
متن کاملEmerging Technologies for the Production of Renewable Liquid Transport Fuels from Biomass Sources Enriched in Plant Cell Walls
Plant cell walls are composed predominantly of cellulose, a range of non-cellulosic polysaccharides and lignin. The walls account for a large proportion not only of crop residues such as wheat straw and sugarcane bagasse, but also of residues of the timber industry and specialist grasses and other plants being grown specifically for biofuel production. The polysaccharide components of plant cel...
متن کاملScope of Algae as Third Generation Biofuels
An initiative has been taken to develop different solid, liquid, and gaseous biofuels as the alternative energy resources. The current research and technology based on the third generation biofuels derived from algal biomass have been considered as the best alternative bioresource that avoids the disadvantages of first and second generation biofuels. Algal biomass has been investigated for the ...
متن کاملPerformance characterization of a pilot-scale oxygen enriched-air and steam blown biomass gasification and combustion system
Conversion of biomass into biofuels (gaseous and liquid fuels) can be achieved primarily by biochemical and thermochemical processes [2]. Although biochemical technologies are well developed and widely used for biofuels production [3], however, the types of biomass can be used are limited. Thermochemical gasification appears to be a promising technology that can exploit the embedded energy with...
متن کاملCatalytic Hydroprocessing of Liquid Biomass for Biofuels Production
The depletion of world petroleum reserves and the increased concern on climate change has stimulated the recent interest in biofuels. The most common biofuels are based on energy crops and their products, i.e. vegetable oil for Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) biodiesel [1] and sugars/starch for bioethanol. However these first generation biofuels and associated production technologies face sever...
